PUDUCHERRY: Housing projects approved under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) are on in full swing. Over 1,700 urban poor families in the Union Territory will benefit upon their completion. One of the objectives of the JNNURM scheme is to provide sustainable improved urban infrastructure and improved basic services to the urban poor. Three such projects are being implemented by the Puducherry Slum Clearance Board (PSCB). According to board officials, of the 71 blocks of 16 dwelling units each, proposed to be built at Lampert Saravanan Nagar, foundation has been laid for eight blocks. Monolithic concrete wall has been completed for one of the blocks, and earthwork is in progress for nine blocks. Each of these units of size 27.61 square metres would consist of two rooms, kitchen, bathroom and balcony. Basic amenities include water supply and access to an underground sewerage system and roads. A ration shop, library, shopping complex, community hall and anganwadi would also be built for the occupants of these units. The total cost of this project is Rs. 37.38 crore, with 75 per cent being contributed by the Centre, and rest by the State. It would be ready by March 2011, said B. Kalaimaran, Chief Executive Officer of the PSCB. A total of 168 dwelling units are being constructed at Kuruchikuppam. Of these, eight blocks, with 12 dwelling units each, are currently being built. One block has nearly been completed, he said, adding that all the dwelling units would be let out by December 2010. All these houses would have access to basic civic amenities, as well as a shopping complex and a park, and the entire project would be completed at a total cost of about Rs. 6.5 crore, according to sources. Apart from these, 432 tenements would be built at Karaikovilpattu, Karaikal, under the Integrated Housing Slum Development Programme . Construction of two of the 12 blocks in total, are in progress, and tenders are being scrutinised for two other blocks. Since this project, approved at a cost of approximately Rs. 17 crore, is being funded only 33 per cent by the Centre, and 67 per cent by the State, it would be ready only by 2012, Mr. Kalaimaran said.
