‘Government also contemplating electoral reforms' HUBLI: Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily has said that the Union Government had plans to set up 850 rural courts across the country in the next two years. Mr. Moily told presspersons here on Sunday that in the first phase the courts would have jurisdiction over six to seven gram panchayats. Rural courts would enable petitioners from rural areas to get speedy justice, Mr. Moily. “The Union Government will also initiate measures to set up mobile courts to ensure speedy disposal of pending cases,” he said. Mr. Moily said that the Union Government was seriously contemplating electoral reforms. People had lost faith in the existing electoral process as they feel that money power and muscle power were having more influence during the election, he said. On the demand for converting the circuit Benches of the Karnataka High Court in Dharwad and Gulbarga into permanent Benches, the Union Minister said that the Government had sought a reconfirmation letter from the Chief Minister and the Chief Justice of the High Court on the issue. Earlier, Mr. Moily unveiled a statue of the late advocate G.M. Patil at the KPES Law College. Chairman of the Legislative Council Veeranna Mathikatti, Advocate-General Ashok Haranahalli and the former Minister H.K. Patil were among those present.
