CHENNAI: The younger generation is not aware of major literary developments in regional languages, Sahitya Akademi Award winner U.A. Khader said.

Speaking at a function organised by the Madras Kerala Samaj to felicitate him here on Sunday, he said that technological developments and the education system have provided an opportunity for the youth to achieve excellence without understanding the literary significance of their mother tongue.

Pointing at the crisis faced by Malayalam on account of the attitude of youth towards new literary contributions, he said, “The younger generation has no dream of Kerala and its language.”

Today's youth do not take initiative on learning about great people who had contributed to enrichment of their language, he said.

The Madras Kerala Samaj played a key role in shaping his career as a writer, Mr. Khader said.

He recalled his association with members of the Samaj during his stay in Chennai a few decades ago.

The response from literary critics, who were part of the Samaj, to a story written by him as a student, Choolaiyil Vaegunha Kutti, strengthened his urge for being a writer.

“I came to Chennai as I wanted to become a painter, but I became a writer because of the influence of the Samaj and encouragement of some of my friends,” he said
