CHENNAI: About 450 persons were screened for eye disorders at a camp organised by The Utkal Association of Madras in association with Sankara Nethralaya on Sunday. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala cut the ribbon and launched the free camp at Raj Bhavan Durbar Hall in the presence of Sankara Nethralaya Chairman Emeritus S.S. Badrinath. The Ennore Port Trust supported the event. The camp was managed by a team from the Elite School of Optometry, a teaching and research institution under the Nethralaya's Medical Research Foundation. Those with distance vision problems were provided glasses free of cost. Cases of cataract were referred to the Sankara Nethralaya for surgery at an early date. The eye camp was part of the annual health screening events organised by the Utkal Association, said its president K. K. Jena. As the cultural and social service forum of Oriyas in Chennai, the Association also engages in free distribution of books and pencils for poor students, extends free medical aid and also organises Tamil-Oriya cultural and literary exchanges. Most of the beneficiaries of the Sunday camp were from urban slums, suburbs and areas around the Ennore Port. The Governor later handed over a cheque for Rs.20,000 under his Discretionary Grant to the Utkal Association.
