Attack on vehicles: four arrested

Kozhikode: The police have arrested four youths in connection with the attack on vehicles of those who participated in a congregation at Muthamthodu, near Thamarassery, in the district on Sunday evening.

A police team arrested Jikesh Damodaran, 23; Anoop Ashokan, 27; Shyam Ashokan, 25; and Rajulesh Balan, 22, on Monday and charged them with Section 153-A (promoting communal enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and Section 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code.

They were produced before the Thamarassery Judicial First Class Magistrate Court I and later released on bail.

The police said that a group of youths attacked the vehicles belonging to the clergy and laity who had attended a prayer meeting at the house of Punathil Martin. The vehicles were parked on the side of the road without causing any traffic obstruction, the police said.

The Thamarassery Diocese protested against the attack on the vehicles.

Procession

The faithful took out a procession in the town in protest against the incident. Mary Mata Cathedral Vicar Joseph Keelith and other priests led the procession.

M.K. Raghavan, MP, in a release here on Monday deplored the incident and urged the police to nab those behind the incident.
