Media should be unbiased, fearless: Raja

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The media should remain unbiased and fearless and point out the mistakes of the rulers, bearing in mind the welfare of society at large, Union Minister for Information Technology and Communications A. Raja has said.

Directory

He was speaking at a function organised by the Coimbatore Press Club to release a telephone directory brought out by it as part of the coming World Classical Tamil Conference.

The first copy of the directory was received by D. Jagan of Annapoorna Hotels.

Not pointing out mistakes in the name of maintaining neutrality would affect society, he said.

He decried the practice of a section of the media of always being anti-establishment. And, a section of the media was always in favour of the Government. “Media should remain objective without fear or favour.”

When the common man's grievances were not redressed by the legislature, executive and judiciary, the media was his last hope. Under such circumstances, the media had a paramount role in protecting democracy.

“Only media would be able to point out the failures of the other three pillars and render justice. The failure of the media will mark the death of democracy under such circumstances.”

Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Coimbatore Corporation Mayor R. Venkatachalam and District Collector P. Umanath spoke on the occasion.

President of the Club V.S. Palaniappan welcomed the gathering and Secretary K.K. Venkatesan proposed a vote of thanks.

Pattas

The Press Club thanked Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for the announcement in the budget, sanctioning house site pattas for journalists in Coimbatore.
