CHENNAI: To commemorate the birth centenary celebration of freedom fighter and industrialist Nelson A.M. Sambanda Mudaliar, the Department of Post released a special cover on Monday.

Postmaster General of Chennai City Region M.S. Ramanujan released the special cover, which was received by former Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court P.R. Gokulakrishnan.

In his special address, Mr. Ramanujan said that every year the Union government paid tributes to untainted personalities by releasing special cover in recognition of the extraordinary work done by them.

India Post saluted Sambanda Mudaliar's spirit of service and his contribution to society.

Mr. Justice Gokulakrishnan praised Sambanda Mudaliar for his selfless service to society; ability to earn the respect of the young and old; ability to keep the family united and for extending financial help to deserving students of the community.

Surgical gastroenterologist N. Rangabashyam described Sambanda Mudaliar as a true son of the soil.

Mudaliar helped everyone who came his way and demonstrated to the modern world the benefits of the joint family system.

M. Kandasamy, Sambanda Mudaliar's brother, said that they were in the process of rolling out welfare schemes – free medical treatment to poor and scholarship for schoolchildren – for which Rs.10 lakh had been set aside for the current year.
