It's a moment to cherish for youngsters

TIRUCHI: Receiving prizes from an Olympian is definitely a moment to cherish for youngsters.

Winners of various competitions held in connection with the annual sports day of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College here on Monday did relish the opportunity to get medals from basketball Olympian N. Amarnath.

The 1980 Moscow Olympics was a momentous occasion in the history of Indian basketball. It was the only time thus far India had its representation in basketball at the quadrennial event. And Mr. Amarnath was part of the team.

“Self belief and willingness to put in hard work are vital to attain success. It is also important to love the game,” he said.

Mr. Amarnath, who led the country in the 1982 Asian Games at New Delhi, advised the youngsters not to get bogged down when success eludes initially. “Practise relentlessly and never lose heart. Hard work and consistent effort will pay off.”

Mr. Amarnath, Chief Manager, State Bank of India, Tiruchi, underlined the importance of sportspersons shining in academics as well. “When sportspersons miss classes because of tournaments, teachers should help them out by arranging special classes,” he felt.

V. Karthika Devi, Directress of Physical Education, in her annual sports report highlighted the achievements of the students at tournaments conducted at various levels.

Mass drill and yoga display by the students enthralled the audience.

The overall title in the U.G. category went to Department of Commerce, while the Department of Mathematics bagged the title in the P.G. section.

Mr. Amarnath gave away prizes in the presence of S. Kunjithapatham, secretary, and K. Meena, Principal.
