Job training for women with speech, hearing impairments

Training, accommodation and food will be free of cost

‘Many factories have agreed to employ the trained women'

DAVANGERE: Vanitha Samaja, a forum engaged in the empowerment of women for the past 55 years, will now train women with hearing and speech disabilities in tailoring and garment manufacture. .

The organisation has already bought sewing machines and other equipment used in garment manufacture and has also recruited trainers who are not just thorough in the subject but also trained to communicate with people with disabilities.

Training and accommodation, with food, at the organisation's Premalaya hostel will be free of cost.

To ensure that the women, after being trained, get employed, the samaja has already spoken to garment factories and taken note of their skill requirements so that the women can be trained accordingly..

Explaining the project here on Monday, Nagamma Keshavamurthy, veteran politician and founder of Vanitha Samaja, said many garment factories had agreed to provide jobs to the trained women irrespective of their disabilities.

Ms. Keshavamurthy said the organisation had not sought government funding for the project. The members of the forum had contributed towards the free training, she said.

Ms. Keshavamurthy said the project would encourage other organisations in the State to take up programmes that would help such women earn a living. At least 35 women have registered for the training, which will be on a first come, first served basis.

The organisation is also mulling computer training for women with disabilities.
