State plans to evolve performance parameters for varsities

Draft for outlining various parameters ready and circulated among varsities for feedback

Introduction of bio-metric attendance system in educational institutions being mulled

HYDERABAD: In a major move to streamline the functioning of universities, the State government has decided to evolve parameters for assessing the performance of various universities annually and ‘release block grants to them accordingly.'

In its demand for grants tabled in the Assembly, the Higher Education Department claimed that there were no separate performance parameters for universities as on date for assessing the work of the varsities. In view of this, a draft for outlining various parameters had been prepared and circulated among the varsities for their feedback.

Once in place, the performance of the varsities would be assessed annually in September in line with the draft guidelines. The department was contemplating introducing bio-metric attendance system in professional and non-professional educational institutions shortly. While this would help improve the performance of students, the government said, it was being contemplated in view of the total reimbursement of fee being extended to students belonging to various sections.

The department said it was also contemplating conducting region-wise post-graduate Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to conventional courses from the academic year 2010-11. The CET for PG courses would enable students make a single application and they would be allotted seats in different universities on the basis of their performance in the examination. It was also planned to introduce common academic calendar to all universities and colleges from the next academic year, the department said.
