More teeth to police to deal with video piracy

HYDERABAD: The State Cabinet at its meeting here on Tuesday approved a Bill that seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Exhibition of Films on TV Screen through Video Cassette Recorder (Regulation) Act of 1993 to give more teeth to the police to deal with the menace of video piracy.

The decision comes in the wake of Chief Minister K. Rosaiah's assurance in Assembly recently. Using the amendment, the government will empower officials of rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Assistant Sub-Inspector to conduct raids on private premises being used to produce pirated version of the films.

Invoking the Section 14 (2) and 8 (1) of the amended Act, a Sub-Inspector will be able to enter a private premises, search and seize incriminating matters.

Among important land alienations made by the Cabinet were allotment of 44.8 acres to APIIC at Thenepalli in Puthalapattu mandal in Chittoor district and 640 acres at Ramapuram in Gudipala mandal of the same district to CMC of Vellore.
