Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, observed “Earth Hour” this past weekend by switching off all lights on the campus for 15 minutes. This was followed by a candle-light march in which students, staff and faculty members actively participated and took an oath to protect the earth, reduce pollution and conserve energy. As part of the campaign, a video presentation was made to sensitise people about the need to save electricity to prevent global warming. Zakir Husain College of Delhi University celebrated its Annual Day earlier this week featuring the achievements of its students, faculty and non-teaching staff. Magsaysay Award winner Rajendra Singh, who was chief guest, spoke about the need to promote humanity and to integrate man's development with nature. “The Waterman”, as he is widely known, also exhorted students to participate in regeneration of the Yamuna and promote holistic unity amid geo-cultural diversity in the country. Deshbandhu College (Evening) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Kingdom-based Association of International Accountants (AIA). The college is reportedly the first in Delhi University to become an approved course providing partner of AIA. The main purpose of the five-year MoU is to facilitate quality education and training for the development of accounting and finance, promote continuous research and strengthen the practice of accountancy and finance. The AIA professional qualification will provide students the ability and understanding needed to develop successful careers in accountancy, finance and business and also training to become statutory auditors. Rohtak-based Maharshi Dayanand University's Department of Economics organised a two-day national seminar on “Gender Equality and Economic Development in India'” earlier this week calling for concrete governmental policy initiatives to bring forth gender equality. It was emphasised that equality in economic, cultural, social, political and civil spheres is necessary for gender parity while health and education are core concerns for gender quality. Noting that globalisation and the financial crisis had adversely affected women, the need for greater role for women in development processes, socio-economic and political decision making was also highlighted. NIS-Sparta has partnered with the Union Rural Development Ministry and Indira Gandhi National Open University under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana special scheme to implement the project in the public-private partnership mode to create employment for rural youth below the poverty line. The partnership would channel efforts towards making the youth trained and employed. NIS-Sparta would source and train candidates in 15 States for placement in the telecom and BPO sectors while IGNOU as the monitoring and certification partner would actively monitor the entire project and certify the students. Aligarh Muslim University organised “Pursuit-10”, an open university sports festival, earlier this week. The inaugural event was a night cricket tournament in which various teams from the different halls of residence participated. Several other games like volleyball, football, carom, table tennis and snooker were also organised. Gurgoan-based JK Business School is introducing a two-year full-time Master's degree programme in retail management starting in July. Students with a recognised Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline are eligible to apply. Those appearing at their final year examination are also eligible subject to proof of graduation.
