North East Trade Expo to kick off today

CHENNAI: As part of its endeavour to improve the livelihood of crafts persons, the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. will conduct ‘North East Trade Expo 2010' in Kamarajar Arangam in Chennai for nine days from Friday.

The fair organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region will bring together crafts of over 100 craftsmen from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. Live demonstration of select few crafts will be done on the premises.

On display at the venue are the hand woven fabrics with rich and symbolic ornamentation of Assam; the eye catching tribal ornaments made from cane, bamboo, glass beads, silver as well as the carpets using dragon, geometric and floral motifs of Arunachal Pradesh; toys and dolls made of straw and clay, the most functional Laishingfee (quilted cotton materials) and famous Kauna Grass cushions and mattress of Manipur; famous ENDI silk weaving and pine apple fibre articles of Meghalaya; bamboo artistic cap of Mizoram; colourful tribal weaves as well as wooden handicrafts basketry items and Naga spear of Nagaland; and cane and bamboo creations from Tripura.

Promoting sales

Talking to reporters on Thursday, North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation's general manager D.C. Borkotoky said that the objective of the exhibition was to promote sale of handicrafts; increase awareness; expose craftsmen to the market; launch new products and designs for trial and promotion; and eradicate intermediaries in the handicrafts sector.
