Antique dagger seized in Chitradurga

Chitradurga: The Chitradurga District Crime and Investigation Bureau (DCIB) has seized a gold-plated, diamond-studded antique dagger in Hiriyur town here on Friday.

One Arogyaswamy has been arrested for allegedly having the dagger in his possession. The recovery was made by a team lead by Roshan Zamir, Police Inspector (DCIB).

Revealing this at a press conference here on Friday, Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram said that on confirmed information, the accused was arrested and interrogated, during which he divulged that he was planning to sell the dagger.

Mr. Labhu Ram said that according to Arogyaswamy, the dagger — measuring 36 X 6 cm — was given to him by one Uday Kumar of Kadur taluk of Chikmagalur district, to sell to any buyer.

The SP said efforts were on to arrest Uday Kumar.

To a question, the SP made it clear that the department was yet to ascertain the actual value of the antique piece. “We have contacted the officials of the Archaeological Department to find out the actual market value of the dagger. We will also be consulting local goldsmiths to find the value of gold and diamonds encrusted on the dagger,” he said. Mr. Labhu Ram said that a case under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act 1972 has been booked against the accused at the Hiriyur Police Station. The Act prohibits the illegal possession/selling of antique items.
