Hosiery manufacturers seek exclusive industrial estates

R. Vimal Kumar

‘This will help the industrialists move their goods faster'

Tirupur: Diminishing competitiveness, lack of adequate housing facilities for skilled workers and absence of a good road network are some of the factors affecting the hosiery industry in the Tirupur textile cluster in the last few years.

To overcome these problems, the apparel manufacturers have come up with some innovative suggestions to the State Government which include creation of at least five industrial estates exclusively for hosiery manufacturers catering to the domestic market, among others.

South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association president A. C. Eswaran said the industrial estates for domestic apparel suppliers, similar to the estates and parks created for apparel exporters at Mudalipalayam and Ettiveerampalayam, could be set up in the peripherals of the city and within a radius of 20 km from the city centre.

“This will help the industrialists move their consignments faster to the destinations avoiding the ever clogged city traffic,” Mr. Eswaran said.

Moreover, establishment of government-funded industrial estates would help ensure that women and workers from backward classes get adequate representations in recruitment process.

According to Mr. Eswaran, the industrial estates should be embedded with housing facilities to attract skilled workforce into the cluster.

At present people from outside hesitate to come here owing to the high cost of living and shortage of good houses because of the population explosion in the city.

Another demand of the hosiery manufacturers is establishment of training institutes by the government to churn out skilled workers for the cluster.
