VISAKHAPATNAM: On the eve of World Prostate Day, the Centre for Cancer Screening and Prevention (CCSP), a unit of TRIMS, conducted an awareness camp at its conference hall at Pithapuram Colony here. Director and in-charge medical officer K. Shantha Kumari spoke on prostate cancer and other prostate problems along with general causes of cancer. The prostate is a part of a man's sexual organs about the size of a walnut and surrounds the tube called the urethra, located just below the bladder. Research has shown that men above 60 years of age with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop prostate cancer. Common symptoms include urinary problems like not being able to urinate, having a hard time starting or stopping the flow, needing to urinate often, especially at night, urine flow that starts and stops and pain or burning during urination, difficulty having an erection, blood in the urine or semen, frequent pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs. KGH Surgeon S.V.Kumar in his talk said prostate cancer was like a veritable time bomb in public health system. Many senior citizens participated and cleared their doubts.
