Committee holds police officer guilty, says Commissioner of Police

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: The allegation of sexual harassment levelled by a woman constable against a senior police official under Commissionerate of Police for Bhubaneswar-Cuttack has been found to be true.

The five-member committee on sexual harassment completed its investigation on Friday and finalised its recommendations.

A woman constable deployed in Cuttack city had alleged that an officer of Assistant Commissioner of Police (formerly deputy superintendent of police) had made physical advancement outraging her modesty.

“The committee has held the officer guilty. We are recommending strictest possible action against him,” confirmed Commissioner of Police Bijay Sharma here.

Since the police officer was a gazzetted officer, any decision regarding his suspension would have to be taken in higher level of government, Mr. Sharma said. There was no question of showing any leniency in this matter, he said.

The woman constable had complained that the senior officer was seeking establishment of physical relationship with her. But when rebutted, the ACP had made physical advancement while she was in police station during the lonely afternoon hours.

Meanwhile, the ACP ranked officer has been asked to go on leave as the matter was under investigation. The sexual slur charged by woman constable appeared to have smeared the image of Commissionerate of Police, which was expected to take tough stance on the issue.
