The programme would enable the constables to respond during crisis situations, writes R. Rajaram.

To meet emergencies:Armed Reserve Constables firing at the respective target in Naranamangalam near Perambalur on Friday.

At the crack of dawn on Friday, a core group of Armed Reserve (AR) Police Constables line up at the foothills in Naranamangalam near Perambalur.

Attired in uniform, the young constables take position with the INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle at the command of the instructors of the Tamil Nadu Commando School (TNCS).

The morning silence at the scenic Naranamangalam foothills is riddled with firing on target that is located about 100 metres as the Constables receive the command “at your own time commence fire.”

The select Constables from the Central Zone carry out firing exercises using AK-47 assault rifle, Self Loading Rifle, Carbine and 9 mm pistol in various positions.

Their marksmanship is put to test through the firing exercise which forms part of the “Ranger Commando Course” they are undergoing at present in Perambalur.

In all, 91 Armed Police personnel, including 88 Constables from Tiruchi Rural, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Karur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, are attending the 40-day “Ranger Commando Course” designed to put the participants in a state of preparedness to tackle crisis situations.

The mosaic of subjects covered are meant to enhance their performance and competence to deal with emergencies, say TNCS instructors.

The group of seven instructors from the TNCS have been imparting training to the Constables in weapon craft, tactics, rock climbing, ambush and attack, reconnaissance, sniper drill, obstacles, buddy concept, frisking, karate, room intervention technique, use of global positioning system device, map reading, first aid, ballistics, mob operations, fire fighting, swimming, and bomb detection and disposal.

The tight schedule begins with set of physical exercises and running for the constables to improve their endurance followed by lecture –cum- demonstrations.

The programme is also aimed at improving the agility and mental alertness of the commando trainees. This would enable in constituting crack teams in every district to respond immediately to crisis situations, says a senior TNCS instructor.

With driving also forming part of the course, arrangements would be made to facilitate the participating Constables to obtain licence for driving light vehicles.

The commando course that culminates on March 30 is also being conducted in other zones, police sources said.
