Stolen jewellery restored

Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S.R.Jangid inspecting the recovered jewellery on Monday.

TAMBARAM: Jewellery stolen from houses in the Madipakkam, Poonamallee and Maduravoyal areas in the past one week and recovered by the police was handed over to owners on Monday.

Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S. R. Jangid, who handed over the jewellery worth Rs.30 lakh to the owners, told reporters that the valuables were recovered following the arrest of 12 men.

On Tuesday last week, a house in Madipakkam was targeted and gold jewellery weighing 59 sovereigns burgled.

Investigations led the police teams on the trail of S.Selvam (36) of Rajavoor village, Kanyakumari district, and he was arrested on Sunday.

Selvam, after taking away the jewellery, buried them at a desolate place in Balaji Nagar, Pallikaranai.

The entire quantity of jewellery was recovered intact.

Wanted in more than 30 similar cases in Madipakkam and Pallikaranai police station limits,

Selvam was detained under the Goondas Act in 2007.

Mr.Jangid also said that jewellery weighing 50 sovereigns, stolen in Puzhuthivakkam, Keelkattalai and Jalladampettai, was also recovered with the arrest of Salman and Ravichandran. In Poonamallee, jewellery weighing 40 sovereigns was recovered with the arrest of Ajit, Mohan and Perumal, a three-member gang based in East Tambaram.

They would target houses in isolated areas of Poonamallee. They had also robbed a 54-year-old man on Saturday.

Seventy sovereigns of jewellery were recovered after the arrest of six men who had struck terror in Nerkundram, Mr. Jangid added.

V. Varadharuju, Annie Vijaya and G.Karthikeyan, Deputy Commissioners, were also present during the press meet.
