Need to empower youth, says Pranab

NEW DELHI: There was a need to empower the youth in the field of scientific and technical education, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Ninth Convocation of Jamia Hamdard (Hamdard University), Mr. Mukherjee, who was the chief guest, lauded the academic initiatives undertaken by the university. Paying tributes to Jamia Hamdard founder Hakeem Abdul Hameed, Mr. Mukherjee praised his vision, single-minded dedication and philanthropy which led to the setting up of the university as a seat of higher education and research.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reminisced about her long association with the university and promised her support for its current initiatives and future endeavours.

Infosys chairman and chief mentor N. R. Narayana Murthy said Indian companies could compete with the best of global players. He appreciated the progress the university had made in a short period of time.

Golden girls

A total of 46 Ph.D. degrees were awarded to recipients in different disciplines such as Islamic studies, management, pharmacy, allied health science, medicine (unani) and science. Toppers in different courses were awarded 60 gold medals and a total of 1,430 students were awarded degrees for their performance in various courses offered by the university. Many gold medals were bagged by girl students for excelling in different courses.

Apprising the audience of the performance of the university, Vice-Chancellor Dr. G.N. Qazi emphasised that Jamia Hamdard was a stellar example of the public-private partnership model and was contributing immensely to the development of society. He also outlined the various areas of research and education in which the university was consistently making efforts. The university was also focusing on the promotion of research activities, linkages with various industries and providing quality human resources to the nation.

Dr. Qazi also elaborated on the new courses including an MBBS course proposed to be launched soon.
