New surgical technique

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Madurai Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre here has introduced Minimally Invasive Video-Assisted Thyroidectomy (MIVAT), Axilla approach, a new technique in thyroid surgery. It has been successfully performed on a few patients in the last two months.

Addressing a press conference here recently, Ramesh Ardhanari, Head, Department of Gastroenterology, claimed that minimally invasive surgery for the neck was one of the latest and interesting applications gaining popularity across the globe.

The use of this technique in thyroid surgery helped in eliminating unsightly scars sometimes caused by conventional surgery and especially at a time when beauty consciousness was gaining among people.

The 2.5-cm incision at the axilla would not be noticeable and young women undergoing this type of surgery would only be happy. Moreover, the cost also would be same as that of conventional surgery and thyroids of 4cm size were being removed using the approach. It was a safe procedure with the same incidence of complications as traditional surgery, and also had advantages in terms of both cosmetic result and postoperative distress. “To start with, MIVAT procedure will be done on simple surgery cases and gradually tried for major surgeries. Right now, we found that this new procedure gives good cosmetic results,” he said.
