CHENNAI: Three persons, including a woman, accused in an international call switching case were sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment by a court here on Tuesday. According to a press release issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation, P. V. Jacob, Vithya Sri Sumathi and T. Balakrishnan, all directors of Passport Communications India (P) Ltd., Chennai established an illegal telephone exchange with computers and other equipment and connected the setup with a telephone exchange. The international incoming calls were routed through the normal telephone lines obtained by the company for EPABX as if the calls were local calls. This led to the VSNL/BSNL incurring a loss of Rs.6.29 crore. The CBI registered a case against the accused under various provisions of the IPC and the Indian Telegraph Act. R. Killivalavan, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, who heard the case, convicted all the three accused and sentenced them to imprisonment for one year. In another case of international call switching, the judge convicted Rajesh Ohja of Rajesh Communications, Chennai, and T. Balakrishnan, a UK national, and sentenced them to undergo one year rigorous imprisonment. In a similar offence, the two had caused a loss of Rs. 2.03 crore to the government, the release said.
