Punjab to tie up with US firms for solar power plants

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Government has decided to set up a chain of solar power plants in collaboration with the US-based Sun Power Corporation and Enterprise Business Solutions (EBS) for generating nearly 1,000 MW power in a phased manner over the next two years.

According to an official release on Saturday, the decision was taken after a joint delegation of Sun Power Corporation and EBS met Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at his residence here on Friday. The Chief Minister directed Secretary (Science & Technology) Viswajeet Khanna to prepare a comprehensive plan to establish a network of solar power plants in the State in collaboration with the two internationally acclaimed companies through the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA).

Mr. Badal also asked the representatives of Sun Power and EBS to set up demo projects on the rooftops of the government buildings for tapping solar energy which could be replicated later in other government buildings such as district administrative complexes, warehousing and Markfed godowns.

The release said Mr. Badal would soon call on Union Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah to get some projects allotted for the State under the various schemes of the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy.

He also agreed to a proposal mooted by the Sun Power-EBS group to set up a training centre for youth in solar technologies at the PEDA complex in Chandigarh.

Sun Power's chief for business development in India Gurmeet Naroola said that the company in a joint venture with the EBS would bring the latest solar technology along with its plan of localised manufacturing facility with an initial investment of Rs. 500 crore.
