14 teams participated in Electroharvest '10

PUDUCHERRY: A project on GPS and GSM-based vehicle navigation and tracking system bagged the first prize at an exhibition of electronic project works of final year students of the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC).

A total of 14 teams, with four members each, participated in the exhibition - Electroharvest '10 - held recently.

The second prize was shared by two teams for projects on “A mobility for the visually challenged with discrete distance indicator and hanging object detector” and “Prototype of wireless automatic gate control and track switching using microcontroller,” according to a release.

Professor and Head of the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, PEC, R. Anandanatarajan explained that the prize-winning project on GPS and GSM vehicle navigation system enabled owners of vehicles to keep track of the location of the vehicle.

“Students have come up with an instrument which can transfer information to the owner on the location of the vehicle. They can see the location of the vehicle on a computer monitor with the help of a map,” he said.

Another team has come up with an electronic device which could be attached to sticks used by visually challenged persons.

It would sound an alarm on detecting any object in the way.

A project on “Web-based remote modelling and control of irrigation process” received the consolation prize.

Organised by the students' council of the department, FUSION, the exhibition was inaugurated by Principal of PEC V. Prithiviraj, the release said.
