All set for a grand Oriya New Year

Cultural organisations in city hold a meeting

BHUBANESWAR:A number of cultural organisations of the city have come together to campaign for a befitting celebration of the Oriya New Year on April 14.

Led by Prerana, the pioneering organisation engaged in conservation of culture and nature, a meeting of the representatives of about 20 socio-cultural organisations was held in the city and resolved to encourage the people of the State to celebrate the Oriya New Year in a befitting manner highlighting Orissa's tradition and culture.

“People should not forget their roots. We celebrate the English New Year with fervour but tend to ignore the Oriya New Year celebrations. It's a misfortune,” stated campaign coordinator and Prerana founder Dilip Srichandan.

The meeting was attended by a number of film actors, Odissi dancers, singers, painters and writers who pledged to celebrate the day with enthusiasm. They also took out a procession carrying earthen lamps and candles to appeal to the public to join the campaign.

Campaign

“We need to involve the youth in the campaign. They need to be reminded about their roots,” stated Bimalendu Mohanty, former Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University of Culture, who joined the campaign.

“We would invite our friends, family members and relatives to join us for the celebration on April 14 and subsequently we would campaign in different towns of the State urging people to celebrate the day in a dignified way,” said actress Zina Samal who attended the meet and pledged her association in the campaign.
