Reduce number of holidays: MLA

Chitradurga: S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, said the Government should stop declaring holidays to mark the birth anniversaries of prominent leaders of various communities. He was speaking at a programme organised by the district administration on the 103rd birth anniversary of Dalit leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram at Ranga Mandir here on Monday.

Frequent holidays, Mr. Basavarajan said, would only hinder the smooth functioning of the administration. “People suffer too as official works gets delayed,” he said.

The State had already declared a number of holidays, he said, and urged the people to not demand holidays on such occasions.Recalling the contributions of the late Dalit leader, the MLA stressed the need to educate the younger generation on the principles and ideologies of Babu Jagjivan Ram.

Cow slaughter

On the Government's proposal to amend the law banning cow slaughter, he said that by doing sothe Government was trying to restrict people's food habits.

“People should be allowed to eat what they like. Law must not control the food habits of people,” he stated.

In his address, G.H. Tippareddy, MLC, described the late leader as a committed politician who stood for the cause of the downtrodden.

Five Ph.D. holders belonging to the Dalit community were felicitated on the occasion. They were Ravi Kumar, Ravi Nayak, B.M. Gurunayak, Prema Pallavi and O. Devaraj.

Sewing machines were distributed to Dalit women.

Earlier, a procession was taken out in various parts of the city to mark the occasion.

Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Rangegowda and ZP president Girijamma Basavarajappa were present.

Floral tributes were paid to Dalit leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 103rd birth anniversary on Monday.

Speakers at the function advised people to follow his principles and work to build a strong nation.

Organisers

The function was organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, the City Municipal Council and the Social Welfare Department at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan.

H.S. Prakash, MLA, who addressed the gathering, stressed the importance of education for social and economic empowerment and advised people to not neglect the girl child.
