BHUBANESWAR: Students of Bhima Bhoi School for the Blind locked up their classrooms protesting against sanction of ‘paltry' monthly diet allowance and ‘very low teacher strength' in their school. Launching the agitation on Monday, the visually-challenged students declared that if their demands were not addressed within three days they would observe fast. “Although students in all other special schools are entitled for a monthly diet allowance of Rs. 750, we have been struggling with Rs. 500 per student here. It is very difficult to manage with the amount,” said Susant Patel, one of the agitating students. Bhima Bhoi School for Blind is the one of two schools operating under the Department of School and Maas Education in the State. Students alleged that although Minister of School and Mass Education Pratap Jena had assured them of increasing diet allowance from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500 per student, the promises were never implemented.
