Tribals allege complete failure of primary education

BERHAMPUR: There has been complete collapse of primary education in remote tribal regions during recent years, alleged tribal leaders.

They expressed this opinion at a workshop for tribal youth that concluded at Govindpalli near Taptapani in Gajapati district on Monday. The main organisers of this workshop were tribal organisations Mukhiuru Loksangathana and Khambeswar Lok Sangathan who were supported by ‘Samman', an NGO working in the area. Chaitanya Gamang of Mhalulapada village and Abhimanyu Dalai of Sialiati village, who lead the two tribal organisations had inaugurated this workshop by lighting lamps.

The tribal delegates who attended this two-day workshop discussed in detail regarding the problems in the implementation of the recently declared fundamental right in the form of right to education in remote areas. The delegates provided practical assessment of education in remote tribal regions. Sixty six delegates including women from 38 tribal villages of south Orissa participated in this workshop.

These tribal activists revealed the reality of the dire state of primary education in tribal regions after the withdrawal of Education Guarantee Scheme in 2007, Sailendra Pattanayak of ‘Samman' said. All tribal delegates said that the number of primary schools with infrastructures and mid-day meal provisions in tribal areas has increased. But according to them most of them lack functionality.
