PATHANAMTHITTA: The State government should constitute a department exclusively for the welfare of senior citizens, physically challenged persons and widows, according to Simon Britto, MLA.

Mr. Britto was inaugurating a seminar, organised by the Kerala Vikalanga Association and the Janavedi, here on Wednesday.

He said the State Human Rights Commission and the welfare board for the physically challenged should be given penal powers. He also called for raising various monthly pensions under social security schemes to Rs.1,000.

Association president Rasheed Anappara presided over the function. A. Jayakumar, lawyer, took a class.

Food grain kits were distributed among 150 poor families.
