KRISHNAGIRI: Heads of departments should reach the left-out differently-abled persons and serve them with a humane face, Collector V.K. Shanmugam told the district officials here on Wednesday.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on differently-abled persons for the heads of government departments, the Collector said that 28,500 differently-abled persons were identified in the district through special medical camps conducted exclusively for them. They constitute 1.97 per cent of the population in the district.

The Rehabilitation Welfare Office has been rechristened by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi recently after making an announcement in the budget in this regard.

He said that Napoleon, Roosevelt, Edison and music maestro Beethoven were differently-abled persons and because of exceptional and inherent talents they became famous worldwide. They changed the obstacles as stepping stones in their life. Hence, it is everybody's responsibility to encourage and help the differently-abled persons to live a normal life.

Differently-abled persons are children of God. Hence, officials should approach them with a humane face and help them lead a normal life in the society with self-respect like ordinary citizens.

Out of the 28,500 differently-abled persons identified through 10 special medical camps, 30 per cent are yet to avail the welfare assistance of the government. C. Manimaran, District Differently-Abled Welfare Officer, Elya Charles, Headmaster, Blind School, Bargur, Semalai, Chief Education Officer (SSA), Block Development Officers from 10 blocks, Special Tahsildhars, representatives of NGOs and heads of various departments attended the workshop.
