Corrections & Clarifications

* It's the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and not the Censor Board of Film Certification as published in the fourth paragraph of a report "`Civil society must push for self-regulation by media'" (April 7, 2010).

* The third paragraph of a report "Sachin meets Saraswathi" (April 7, 2010) said that the April 1 issue of The Hindu Metro Plus broke the story of how Saraswathi had kept track of Tendulkar's glorious journey. A reader (from Bangalore) said that it should have been the April 6 issue. The story, "Batting for Sachin", was first published in the Chennai edition, on April 1, and subsequently published in the Bangalore edition on April 6.

* Referring to a report "Essentials in short supply in Manipur" (April 5, 2010), the writer clarifies: The first paragraph had the detail "the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah)". It should have been the "NSCN (K)", as mentioned in the unedited report. The NSCN(K) had tried to extort Rs. 50 lakh.

* A clarification in connection with two reports in The Hindu, published earlier this year. The first report, "Changing the rules of the energy game" (Op-Ed, January 12, 2010), said that Russia has become the largest producer of oil in the world, while the second report, "Iran, U.S war of words intensifies" ("International" page, February 17, 2010), said that Saudi Arabia was the largest producer and exporter of oil. A reader wanted to know which country was the largest producer and exporter of oil, and Russia's position in crude oil production.

The Russia correspondent clarifies: As of March 2010, Russia was the world's largest oil producer, averaging 10.12 million barrels of crude per day (mbd) as against 8.1 mbd for Saudi Arabia. However, these figures do not tell the whole story, because Russia, unlike Saudi Arabia, is not a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and is not constrained by OPEC production quotas. The Saudi oil minister said recently that his country could boost crude production by 4.1 mbd if global oil demand picked up. The production of refined petroleum is not included in the figures given. The West Asia correspondent clarifies: Russia has become the largest oil producer in the world, producing an average of 9.93 mbd (in 2009) for a total of 494.2 million tons. In March 2010, Russia's oil production rose to 10.12 mbd. However, in terms of reserves, Russia has the eighth largest oil deposits in the world. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia has the world's largest oil deposits, which currently stand at 267 billion barrels. In terms of exports, Saudi Arabia is currently the world's second largest exporter. Analysts say that Russia has, on several occasions in the past, ramped up production and temporarily overtaken Saudi Arabia as the largest oil exporter in the world.

* The scorecard in a report "Murali Vijay's pyrotechnics light up Chennai" ("Sport", April 4, 2010) was incorrect in saying "Rajasthan bowling: . Wagh 1-0-16-0" when he had taken the wicket of Hayden, as mentioned in the text.
