Medicines with lapsed expiry date seized

Staff Reporter

Complaints against 7 quacks have been received and one of them is arrested by the police

SIVAKASI: Medicines that have outlived their shelf life worth Rs. 6,000 were seized from various medical shops in Sivakasi health unit district since Monday.

The Sivakasi Deputy Director (Health), S. Balasubramanian, said that among the medicines, for which the expiry date had lapsed, were those meant for diabetes and hypertension.

“The medical shops were in the practice of inserting strips of tablets, with lapsed expiry dates, between those strips of fresh medicines. The fresh strips were given to the literates and those with lapsed expiry dates to the illiterates,” Dr. Balasubramanian said. “In one of the shops at Satchiyapuram, the medicines meant to treat infertility in women, which had expired as early as 2006, were recovered,” he said.

Dr. Balasubramanian said that block level and town level teams, led by block medical officer and municipal medical officer, have been formed to raid medical shops. Each team comprised health inspectors, pharmacists, community health nurses.

Meanwhile, complaints against 7 quacks have been received. “They were either practicing allopathy medicine without any proper medical education. Some of them had worked as assistants for doctors. One of them was arrested by the police,” Dr. Balasubramanian said.

Reports on the raids would be sent to the district administration, Directorate of Public Health and Drug Inspectors.
