No need for school panels, says NSS

Perunnai: The Nair Service Society has urged the government not to proceed with the decision to form School Management Committees as mentioned in the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill, 2009, under the special circumstances in the State.

There is no question of allowing such committees as the control of institutions will be usurped by politicians, NSS leaders said in a statement here.

NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Panikker said the unique situation in Kerala warrants the government to take steps to protect the rights of aided school managements in running and controlling educational institutions.

As per the provisions of the Act, the government has formed six sub-committees to look into the implementation of the Act, he said.

Welcoming the law, NSS assistant secretary G. Sukumaran Nair said it would create ground for more schools and infrastructure facilities in the school education sector.

The provision for enrolling 25 per cent of students for free education and the decision to bear their expenses by the government were a welcome step, they said. — PTI
