GJM chief to meet Chidambaram today

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president, Bimal Gurung, is scheduled to meet the Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram in New Delhi on Friday when there is a likelihood of them discussing issues related to the interim administrative set-up proposed by the former for the Darjeeling hills and certain areas contiguous to it.

Though sources in the GJM said Mr. Gurung and three of his associates would be paying a “courtesy call” on Mr. Chidambaram, it comes at a time when the contentious issue of the jurisdiction of the interim “regional authority” engages the attention of both the Centre and the West Bengal government.

Mr. Gurung's visit is significant as he has chosen to stay away from the ongoing tripartite talks to resolve the political impasse in the Darjeeling hills arising from the GJM's demand for a “Gorkhaland” State. Five rounds of discussions have so far been held.

A GJM delegation would hold talks with officials of the Centre and the West Bengal government later this month when issues related to the jurisdiction of the proposed interim set-up and its administrative powers are expected to be discussed, a senior GJM leader told The Hindu over telephone from Darjeeling district on Thursday.
