Re-exam if answer sheets are not found

Special Correspondent

262 Plus Two students will have to take the examination at the Musiri school

Thangam Thennarasu

CHENNAI: School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Thursday expressed the hope that the missing bundle of answer sheets of 262 higher secondary students would be found in a day or two.

If the answer sheets were not found, a re-examination would be held.

The results of the re-examination would be announced along with the results of higher secondary examinations, Mr. Thennarasu told the Assembly.

The Minister, replying to a call attention notice given by a host of parties, said 479 students of the Government Boys' Higher Secondary School, Musiri, and the Government Higher Secondary schools in Ayyampalayam and Thangalipudur took the physics and economics examinations at the Musiri school on March 8.

While two bundles of the answer sheets for physics were sent to Coimbatore, one bundle of answer sheets for economics was sent to Chennai.

Except one bundle bound for Coimbatore, the other two bundles reached the destinations. All the bundles were sent by the government examination authorities through registered parcel.

Enquiry

During an enquiry, it was found that the bundle was lost in transit and a human error was responsible. Immediately, the examination authorities contacted the Postal department, which, in turn, preferred a complaint with the Tiruchi Cantonment police station on Monday.

When K. Balabharathy (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and V. Sivapunniyam (CPI) requested the Minister to give maximum marks to the students instead of holding the re-examination, the Minister ruled out such a possibility, as marks given in the case of physics would be considered for admission to professional courses.

If the option of assigning marks without the re-examination was resorted to, other students might challenge the move legally.

Mr. Thennarasu said enough time would be given to prepare for the re-exam.

An official release stated that the re-examination would be conducted on April 22 at the Musiri school.

The students who had registration numbers from 469874 to 469951 (except 469879); 469968 to 470052 (except 470045) and 470272 to 470375 (except 470274, 470308 and 470342) were advised to appear in the examination, the release added.
