VIJAYAWADA: Accent and dialect cannot be the basis for division of a State. If they are made the basis, then three or four new States can be formed in Telangana itself, Krishna District Writers' Association general secretary G.V. Poornachand said on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Poornachand said that if dialect was made the basis, Andhra Pradesh should be divided into many States. There was a difference in the way Telugu was spoken by the people of Krishna and Guntur districts and also by the people of East Krishna and West Krishna. There were dialects spoken by people belonging to particular social class (sociolect) and those belonging to a particular region (regiolect) and it would be very difficult to think of dividing the State on the basis of these differences, he said. Mr. Poornachand said it was unfortunate that the political leaders of one region were abusing and scolding people of other regions in the State to further their political interests. He pointed out that Telugu was a neglected language. The way Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram made an announcement late in the night about the formation of Telangana gave credence to the conspiracy theory that some forces were working overtime to undermine and weaken the Telugu people.
