Two jawans held for raping 19-year-old

Staff Reporter

PUNE: Two Army jawans were arrested here on Friday on the charge of raping a 19-year-old girl on Wednesday.

Rajnishkumar Sureshchandra and Sundarsingh Mahipalsingh of the Rajputana Rifles were remanded to police custody till April 15 by the Pimpri court.

Inspector of the Sangvi Police Station Bhagwat Sonawane told The Hindu: “The rape took place between 9.30 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. on the night of April 7. The girl was with a male friend near the military area at Pimple Saudagar. The jawans scared him away, took the girl to a secluded area and raped her.”

He said: “The girl filed a complaint with us. During the rape, the jawans gave a missed call from their phone to hers. We were able to track them down using their mobile numbers. The girl, a resident of Chinchwad, [15 km from here], has been taken to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital [at Pimpri-Chinchwad] for medical check-up.”
