Making a point:Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa addressing a gathering after inaugurating development projects at Hunasagi in Surpur taluk of Yadgir HUNASAGI (YADGIR DISTRICT): The State Government has approved modernisation of the Narayanpur Left Bank Canal (NLBC) of the Upper Krishna Project. Announcing this at a function to mark the inauguration and launch of work on various development projects here on Saturday, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said that modernisation of the canal, which will begin this year, would be completed in three years during the off-season period. The foundation stone for projects, including Rs. 16.7-crore Bonal Lift Irrigation Project and Rs. 20-crore underground drainage system in Surpur town, was laid here on Saturday. Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the canal's carrying capacity would improve following modernisation. He said the Chief Minister gave his approval for the project on the spot on Saturday. The cost of the project was estimated at Rs. 400 crore, he added. Mr. Bommai said that modernisation of the canal would be taken up as per the recommendations of the expert team of the Indian Institute of Science which studied the canal system and submitted a report to the Government a few years ago suggesting immediate repairs to the canal. He said that owing to faulty construction, there were seepages at several places and regular breaches in the canal. The Chief Minister said that the Government had accorded priority to irrigation projects. During the current year, 17 of the 39 long-pending projects would be completed and 1.25- lakh acres of land would be brought under irrigation network. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that incentive provided to milk producers had been increased from Rs. 2 to Rs. 4.50 a litre. This would benefit over 7.5 lakh families involved in dairying, he added. BJP State unit president K.S. Eshwarappa and Surpur MLA Raju Gowda were among those who spoke on the occasion. Later, Mr. Yeddyurappa and Mr. Eshwarappa launched the party's campaign for gram panchayat elections by inaugurating the Vijaya Sankalpa Samavesha in Gulbarga city.
