24 warehouses gutted in container depot

NEW DELHI: A major fire broke out in a container depot here on Saturday, destroying 24 of the 25 warehouses that stored goods worth crores of rupees meant for export.

The fire started around 5 a.m., but the Fire Service was informed only at 5:45 am. It spread rapidly to 30 containers storing clothes and tyres at the depot, the largest dry port in South Asia.

Delhi Fire Services Director R.C. Sharma said there was a delay of 45 minutes in reporting the matter to the Fire Service. “By the time we reached there, a portion of the roof had collapsed.” — PTI
