THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) T.V. Rajesh has said his organisation will not permit the operation of online lotteries in Kerala. At a press conference here on Saturday, he accused the Union government of trying to legalise online lotteries, which represented all the evils of gambling. The Congress-led government at the Centre was doing this to further the greed of a mafia flourishing in the online lottery business, he alleged. The Centre was also trying to destroy the paper lotteries run by State governments by imposing a service tax on them. In Kerala, thousands of physically challenged and aged people were earning their livelihood selling the State government's paper lotteries. The ruin of paper lotteries would be a big blow for these people. Mr. Rajesh alleged that some paper lotteries run by other State governments were not adhering to provisions against cheating. Some tickets were being printed in private presses. Recently, police raids conducted under a direction from the Supreme Court had unearthed the functioning of 32 illegal lotteries in the country. But the Central law governing lotteries would not permit action against such lotteries by the State governments. The Union government, which had the legal powers to act against fraudulent lotteries, had no inclination to do so either, he said.
