Avvayar festival

Staff Reporter

VEDARANYAM: The 36th Avvayar festival was commemorated here at Thulasiyapattinam village in Nagapattinam on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, A. Annadurai, Collector in-charge evoked the linguistic simplicity of Avvayar in her works like Aathichudi, Nalvazhi, Kondraivendhan and Moodhurai that aided easy comprehension even for the uninitiated.

To have prevailed as a woman poet at a time, when women were confined to domesticity with no access to intellectual pursuit, Avvayar had left behind a legacy of sorts, Mr.Annadurai said. Further, she chartered out a path of rationalism through her literary works, he said.

The annual Avvayar festival is organised here at Thulasiyapattinam at the temple dedicated to the poet by the Tamil Nadu government.
