Minister warns spurious drug traders

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam has warned of stringent action against quacks and those who are involved in production of spurious drugs. The government has launched a State-wide vigil against unscrupulous elements, he said.

The Minister told presspersons at Kurinjipadi on Saturday that in 1991 cases had been booked against those who manufactured spurious drugs but only nominal punishment was meted out to them. Subsequently there was no proper supervision on such unauthorised trade.

But now the State government was taking severe measures against those who were marketing time-barred and fake drugs. The officials of the Health and Police departments were jointly carrying out inspections in pharmaceuticals. Similarly, the officials were also keeping a watch in villages against the quacks, the Minister added.
