Thiruvananthapuram triumphs

IRINJALAKUDA: Thiruvananthapuram dethroned defending champion Ernakulam 34-24 to win the boys title in the State Sub-junior basketball tournament on Sunday night.

Sidharth (12) and Albin Thomas (10) did bulk of scoring for Thiruvananthapuram which led 19-10 at half-time. For Thrissur, Ashik top-scored with 12 points.

S. Akhil (Tvm) and India Nelson (Tsr) were chosen as the best players of the tournament in the boys and girls sections respectively and they were each given a cash award of Rs 2000.

P.L.Nikhil (Ekm) and Anju Joseph (Knr) were chosen as the promising players of the tournament in either sections and they were each given a cash award of Rs 1,000.

AVG claims title

AVG Anickad won the title in the Kottayam district ‘A' division cricket league on Monday. In the final, AVG beat Friends CC Kottayam by 57 runs.

Chasing a modest target of 144, Friends CC was bundled out for 86 as Sunil (three for 12) and Jithin (three for 16) wrecked the innings.

The scores: AVG Anickad 143 in 34.3 overs (Balaji 33, Antony Mathew 31, Nimish three for 26) bt Friends CC 86 in 28.3 overs (Jithin three for 16, Sunil three for 12) .

Big win

Hercules Kids CC (Thiruvananthapuram) defeated Falcon CC (Kozhikode) by 86 runs and entered the semifinals of the Youngsters all-Kerala cricket tournament at the SD College ground, Alappuzha, here on Monday.

In another match, AG's Office (Thrissur) defeated Legends CC (Kottayam) by six wickets to reach the quarterfinals.

The scores: Hercules Kids CC 161 in 20 overs (Sajan Salim 81, Fazal four for 33) bt Falcon CC 75 in 14 overs (G.S. Anoop three for 19)

Legend CC 157 for eight in 20 overs (K.J. Rajesh 37, Vinod Kumar three for 44) lost to AG's Office 158 for four in 18.5 overs (Visakh Chandran 66).

Services football

The Services football championship, hosted by the Southern Naval Command, begins at the Command Stadium, Willingdon Island, on Tuesday.

Four teams — defending champion Army Red, Army Green, Indian Navy and Indian Air force — will figure in the event.

Surgeon Rear Admiral Sushil Kumar, Command Medical Officer, Southern Naval Command, will inaugurate the championship. The event ends on April 16.

Selection trials

Trials to select the Thiruvananthapuram district under-19 cricket team will be held at 8 a.m. at the KPK Menon memorial ground, Jawahar Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram, on April 15.

Only registered players and those born on or after 1-9-1991 are eligible to take part. Those interested should register their names with the TDCA office before 5 p.m. on April 14.
