HYDERABAD: A car driver, Shekhar, 30, who consumed acid at Saroornagar on Saturday, reportedly worried over the complaint of harassment his wife had lodged against him with police, died on Sunday undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital. The victim's relatives alleged that harassment by his wife, Navaneeta, 24, in-laws and Inspector of Saroornagar women police station, Laxmi, drove him to suicide. To substantiate their charge, they showed a suicide note purportedly written by Shekhar in which he stated that his wife, in-laws and the Inspector were responsible for his death. “However, Shekhar's family members did not lodge any specific complaint in this regard. They also did not give the suicide note to us for examination,” Saroornagar Inspector S. Damoder told reporters. A resident of Bhagat Singh Nagar, the driver married Navaneeta two years ago. His wife approached the woman police station on March 28 accusing him of harassment. Inspector Laxmi counselled both the husband and the wife. Two days later, Shekhar brokered a compromise agreeing to pay Rs. 1.75 lakh to his wife on instalment basis. Payment of first instalment was due on Saturday but he could not give money as assured. The next morning, he consumed acid in his house and was admitted to OGH for treatment. A case of suspicious death was registered.
