Sudhakar Sahu feted

Moment to cherish: Guru Sudhakar Sahu being greeted by his disciples on his 75 birthday in Bhubaneswar.

BHUBANESWAR: The 75 {+t} {+h} birthday of eminent Odissi Guru Sudhakar Sahu was celebrated at Rabindra Mandap here on Monday in a touching manner. The event was hosted by Kala Vikash Kendra of Chhatrapur in association with numerous disciples and fans of the dance exponent across the State to highlight his significant contributions.

Culture Minister Debi Prasad Mishra, who inaugurated the event, presented the first Sudhakar Sahu Samman to three eminent people from the field of Odissi dance and music in appreciation of their pioneering contribution in their respective fields. They were madral exponent Banamali Moharana (received in absentia by his disciple), Odissi dance exponent Gangadhar Pradhan and Odissi music exponent Ramahari Das.

Eminent Odissi exponent and actress Minati Mishra and actor-turned politician Siddhant Mohapatra, now a parliamentarian, were present on the occasion along with Guru Sudhakar who was worshipped on stage by his disciples. Disciples of the Guru also staged a number of dance recitals – all his choreographic works – as a mark of respect for the Guru. The performers included Dipti Mishra, Vani Madhab, Manoj Kumar Behera, Alaka Sahu, Itishree Mohanty and Urmila Sahu.

Their solo and duet recitals were followed by an impressive group presentation by the artistes of Kala Vikash Kendra, Chhatrapur.
