CUTTACK: In view of the ongoing face off between the State government and doctors belonging to Orissa Medical Services Association (OMSA) and the impeding strike by peripheral doctors from April 18, the SCB medical college and hospital here is expected to witness a heavy influx of patients in next few days. Since the strike-bound doctors in rural areas have stopped receiving new patients, the referral hospital here has started feeling the pinch. SCB hospital on Tuesday received at least 10 per cent more patients and the situation is likely to aggravate in next few days, sources disclosed. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities on Tuesday took stock of the situation and the doctors belonging to Orissa Medical Teachers Association (OMTA) were specifically asked to remain alert for next few days to meet the exigencies. Assistant professors under OMTA have been asked to man the Casualty and Blood Bank of the hospital in case the doctors under OMSA decide to go on strike. “All the doctors of the hospital have been asked not to take any leave in near future and those who have already gone on leave are asked to cancel their leaves and join in duties immediately”, said the hospital superintendent D.N. Moharana. The doctors have also been asked to remain mentally prepared to work for some extra hours if need arises, he added. Since the casualty and blood bank of the hospital are manned by the doctors belonging to OMSA, arrangements have been made to ensure that work in these two departments do not hamper during the strike period. The Pathology department of the hospital has been asked to run the blood bank and similarly, some assistant professors of different departments have been short-listed to look after the casualty department during the strike period, sources disclosed. In another related development, it was learnt that that OMSA after not getting any relief from the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT) on Monday is planning to move the State High Court for an interim stay on the mass transfer order of the doctors by the State government. Similarly, the State government is also learnt to have made all efforts to contest the OMSA plea in the High Court.
