Devotees pull the holy car at Narthamalai temple festival

Festive mood: Devotees at Narthamalai Shri Muthumariamman temple car festival in Pudukottai district on Monday. —

PUDUKOTTAI: A large number of devotees offered worship at Sri Mariamman temple at Narthamalai, near here, on the occasion of the ‘Panguni' car festival on Monday.

‘Alagu' and ‘paravai kavadi' worship formed the highlight of the festival.

A number of devotees were seen walking on the Pudukottai – Tiruchi Highway with a long piece of metallic ‘alagu' pierced through their cheeks. A large number of devotees from neighbouring villages took out ‘pada yatra'

The processional idol of Sri Mariamman was brought to the temple car and amidst religious fervour, devotees pulled the car.

The festival commenced with ‘poochorithal' rituals on March 28.

The ‘Kaappu kattudhal' for the Panguni Peruvizha was held on April 4.

The idol of Sri Mariamman was taken out in various ‘vaganams' daily in the night.

P. Pandian, Executive Officer, Pudukottai Temples; and N. Pughazhendi, Assistant Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department made arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival.

Special buses run from Tiruchi, Pudukottai

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation operated special buses from Tiruchi and Pudukottai up to Narthamalai.

Traffic regulation

Special arrangements were made by the police to regulate traffic on the Tiruchi – Pudukottai highway.
