Madurai
MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday directed the Managing Director of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Madurai division, to operate more number of regular city bus services charging normal fare at least on the routes in which people commute frequently to reach places of their vocation. Disposing of a public interest litigation petition filed by N. Muthulakshmi, a resident of West Perumal Maistry Street here, Justices F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and K.B.K. Vasuki directed the Managing Director to consider a representation made by the petitioner on March 22 and redress her grievances preferably within two weeks. In her affidavit, the petitioner said that of late, the TNSTC was operating more number of LSS (Limited Stop Service) buses, air (deluxe) buses and point-to-point buses in which the passengers were charged exorbitantly compared to the normal fare collected in the ordinary service buses. She alleged that almost all buses in the city were being operated under different nomenclatures thereby fleecing the people of their hard-earned money. Construction labourers, vegetable/fruit vendors, students and others find it difficult to pay more for travelling in buses categorised as special services. Ms. Muthulakshmi said that the TNSTC was entitled to collect only Rs.3.50 for operating a bus for a distance of seven km between Periyar bus stand and Mattuthavani (Integrated Bus Stand). “But the Respondents were charging between Rs.7 and Rs.10 which is against their own rules and norms,” her affidavit read. The petitioner also said that the frequency of operating air (deluxe) buses should be reduced in order to pave way for regular services. She further alleged that the deluxer buses with broken windows and doors were not providing any kind of additional comfort as was claimed by the TNSTC.
