EC to keep close vigil on Council candidates' spending

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will keep a close watch on the expenditure by the candidates in the elections to three Legislative Council seats under the Local Authorities Constituency (LAC) constituencies.

Chief Electoral Officer I.V. Subba Rao at a press conference here on Tuesday to announce issue of notification for the Council elections said, though there was no expenditure limit for the Council candidates, a watch would be kept.

The CEO said: “We will keep a close watch on spending and reduce it to a large extent,” he added. Special Commissioner, GHMC, Hyderabad Navin Mittal has been made the Returning officer for Hyderabad LAC while Ranga Reddy Joint Collector – 2 is the Returning Officer for Ranga Reddy LAC.

Mr. Subba Rao said ballot papers would be used for the polling instead of Electronic Voting Machines. “Members will cast their votes in preferential manner,” he said.

The CEO said elections to three seats could not be conducted due to non-existence of required number of local bodies/electors constituting the electorates of these constituencies. After the elections, the terms of members would be determined by draw of lots so as to synchronise with the cycles of biennial retirement of 23 members belonging to the LAC elected in 2007 on first day of May in 2011, 2013 and 2015 respectively.

He said revision of Photo Electoral Rolls, 2010 for 12 Assembly constituencies in which vacancies have arisen due to resignation of the elected members would be taken up from May 28 and be ready on July 2.

In the remaining 282 constituencies publication of draft rolls would take place on May 28 and final rolls would be ready by July 17.
