Over 20 persons injured, at least 12 buses damaged

PERIAKULAM: Over 20 persons were injured and at least 12 buses damaged in a clash during a procession taken out in the town to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar on Wednesday night.

Police fired two rounds in the air to bring the situation under control.

Over 1,200 people from Thamaraikulam and Kallupatti villages, carrying milk pots and fire pots, took out a procession and reached Periakulam.

Later, they garlanded the Ambedkar statue in the old bus stand and stayed at the spot for a long time.

Stones pelted

When the police attempted to disperse the crowd, an unruly mob pelted stones at houses and shops.

Later, the police resorted to a mild lathi charge as the situation went beyond control.

But the small group of police could not control the mass.

The gang pelted stones at 12 buses proceeding to various destinations from Theni.

Under control

In the meanwhile, special police force from Theni chased the crowd in all directions and brought the situation under control.

Again, a group of persons who waited on Thandupalayam Pattalamman Temple Road attacked the police.

In turn, the police fired two rounds in the air to control the unruly mob.

Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan along with two DSPs rushed to the spot and secured 50 persons.
